The Role of the Facilitator in Experiential Learning
The facilitator in experiential learning is a guide, a mentor, and a coach. They are not there to simply impart knowledge, but to create an environment where learners can explore, experiment, and discover on their own. The facilitator’s role is to provide the necessary resources, pose thought-provoking questions, and guide learners through the process of reflection and self-discovery.
Unlike traditional teaching roles, the facilitator is not the center of attention. They are not the ‘sage on the stage’, but rather the ‘guide on the side’. Their role is to support and encourage learners, helping them to take ownership of their learning journey. This requires a unique set of skills and a deep understanding of the principles of experiential learning.

With this "guide on the side" philosophy in mind, design an experiential learning activity that puts these principles into practice.
Discussion Prompt Details
Design a short simulation, game, or role-play scenario (live or online) that addresses a real-world challenge, ideally based on your practice lecture topic. Include the following sections in your post:
- Setup Instructions: What needs to be done to prepare for the activity?
- Learner Roles: Who are the participants and what are their goals?
- Debrief Plan: What specific questions will you, as the facilitator, ask to guide reflection?
- Analysis: Briefly analyze how your design fosters engagement and reflection, and how it empowers the facilitator to be a "guide on the side."
After posting your scenario, ask your peers for specific feedback. Finally, respond to at least two classmates' posts with constructive suggestions.
