Business Growth & Leadership Development SME/Business Coach
In our push to turn SMEs into trainers, we fail to realize two things. (1) SMEs are one of our busiest resources. (2) Not every SME is a teacher. and (3) SMEs need to continue to learn and grow professionally themselves in addition to helping others to get up to speed. Limited opportunities for growth, overwork, and a career patj that leaves these essential stewards in place leads to complacency, burnout, boredom, and a feeling of being taken for granted.
At the same time, newly minted SMEs feel like they have been thrown into the deep end without a life preserver. In many cases, knowledge has been lost over the years, everyone is too busy to help, and few have good insight on how to be a mentor.
How do companies resolve this? In many cases, they seek to inject energy into the organization by hiring from the outside. Rather than bringing a new hire into a broken process with the expectation that they work 'miracles in minutes', there is a better option.
In my experience, a more effective solution is to focus on talent retention and growth, managing processes, and organizational development. Minimizing turnover and churn helps businesses to resolve issues that hold them back and to pursue new opportunities with vigor.
